Cella Gallery is pleased to present “Femme Fatale”, a group exhibition featuring the works of over 35 innovative artists handpicked by curators: Nicole Bruckman and Stephanie Chefas. An archetype in history and art, the femme fatale is a timeless figure whose mysterious beauty has inspired artists for generations. Although this seductive character is constantly evolving to represent the social views of the times, she remains a symbol of female independence and a welcomed challenge to traditional gender roles.

“Femme Fatale” gathers some of the most powerful contemporary artists whose inherent aesthetic is heavily influenced by the beauty of the female figure. The exhibition explores how individual perceptions of feminine allure can be expressed through each artistʼs specific genre. Expect to be seduced, ensnared and dangerously dazzled as though in the crosshairs of a femme fatale herself.

About the Curators:
Upon receiving her B.F.A. in illustration from Columbus College of Art & Design, Nicole Bruckman began working as a freelance illustrator, which eventually led to exhibiting with Cannibal Flower, La Luz de Jesus, WWA Gallery and Gallery 1988. Along with her artwork, Nicole has co-curated exhibitions featuring numerous artists including Ben Kehoe, Dan May, Lindsey Carr, Kozyndan and Tim Biskup. Stephanie Chefas is founder and curator of the art website Platinum Cheese as well as an online contributor to the highly regarded art magazine, Hi-Fructose. In addition to her online ventures, Stephanie has co-curated several exhibitions featuring numerous contemporary artists such as Annie Owens, David Ball, Jim Darling, Julian Callos and Mario Wagner.

Cella Gallery is a contemporary fine art gallery that has been on the forefront of emerging art in the Los Angeles area since 2008.

Self Promotion. Self Promotion. Self Promotion.

Say that three times out loud, and just see how dirty you feel.

Sounds like such a shameful word pairing?

Over the course of my career as artist, author, musician and designer I have been approached about "self-promotion" and my views. It baffled me, until one day I was told by a friend and store-owner who sold my jewelry that a customer picked up one of my necklaces, and said to her "Boy, that Aunia Kahn is everywhere". We both laughed a bit about the recount, but then got into a lengthy discussion about promotion. It confirmed that I was doing my job, well.

TOOT TOOT

Bringing this up I am not trying to toot my own horn, I do that enough don't you think? Moreover, I'm trying to help those who are conflicted with the idea of self promotion, seeing how important it is to their career. I do not claim to have all the answers, nor do I claim that how I do things is the right way, I just know it works for me and has worked for years through running a recording label back in the 90's until now, where my art is my empire.

LOSE YOURSELF IN WHAT YOU DO...

Art as a career is a very interesting journey to say the least. Most of us that make art put our heart, blood, sweat, bones, skin, and our very souls into the work that we do. Our works are deep, even if on the outside obscure to the viewer, many of use our art as a form of catharsis, exploring ourselves and the world around us, speaking up about causes and things that mean a lot to us. There are many other reasons, too long to outline in this post, but I will eventually be addressing them in a later blog.

I HAVE TO WORK?

With putting so much of ourselves into what we do, those of us that are looking to move to the next level, and get the works seen in galleries, magazines, etc. we are then prompted with the idea that we must "work". You must "work" to get you art/talent seen. Sure, making art is "work" as well, but don't forget there is a business end all this creativity if you want to make a mark on the ever growing map in the art world.

HIDE AWAY & BE DISCOVERED. JUST NOT GOING TO HAPPEN

You can't just make art and expect some gallery or magazine to come hunt your ass down in your basement studio painting some masterpiece begging you for an interview, if you have never shared your work with the light of day. Unless you're found dead in your studio painting a masterpiece, then you might become one of many famous dead artists. From what I am hearing though, most artists want to see some of that lime-light while they are still breathing. You can't do absolutely nothing and expect absolutely everything.

THE TOILET PAPER SCENARIO

So, you come to the realization if you want to make waves and be seen you might just have to "sell yourself/art". Understand, selling your art, is much more complicated than selling most things will help you get a perspective on what you're dealing with. Take "Toilet Paper" for example. People need TP (well most people anyhow). If you were a TP salesman, you can bank on at least some sales based on necessity alone. Sure, people will be picky about brands, but a business based on "need" will get more sales.

Art is not like that, you are guaranteed absolutely nothing. People don't need your art, unless maybe to wipe their ass, but that is too expensive for most. Also note if a person declines your offer to sell them TP, you can't really take it personally, it's TP. That is all is it. Yet when branching out and sharing your art with the world, rejection can be much more debilitating to ones ego. Truthfully it can take some getting used to or working up to. If someone tells you that your art sucks, and you are not used to hearing that type of criticism can feel pretty terrible. So many artists avoid getting their work out there based on that fear alone. Don't let the fear stop you. Everyone has an opinion, and not everyone will like your work. Some will love it, others will hate it and want to rip it to shreds. It's like everything else in life. I really don;t enjoy most country music, but does that make country music any less enjoyable to those that love it, no. Let that fear go.

TOO MUCH//NOT ENOUGH

Now comes the point of contention that I get into with people about "Self Promotion". When is it "too much promotion" or "not enough promotion", and where is that "fine balance"? In all actuality there is no fine balance to "Self Promotion" that I am aware of, and it is all based in trial and error. Coming from a self-taught background, almost everything I have done has been based in trial and error (most based on good research), and to go that rout you need to be fearless, and give things a try you never thought possible. Reach for things you believe are out of reach, and change your belief system. Not to be cheesy or cliche, but "Reach for the Stars". Don't sell yourself short, or others will too.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING? KEEPING THINGS FRESH! Yes.

A portfolio is very important, along with the presentation of said portfolio, but if you have not created anything new in the last 5 years, you might want to hop to it. Galleries, publications, fans, etc want to see new work, they want to see the new ideas that you have bouncing around in your head become live on paper. Also remember that it's okay to change; change your style, your angle, your color pallet, your subject matter, because it should not be a sin to explore your creativity. Never just do things because people "like" that in which you are doing. Creativity is not about making the masses happy, and if you are in it for that reason, you might want to go into web design or commercial work. Create to create, not to please others.

HOW TO PROMOTE?

1) Get your art on the internet first and foremost, it is the cheapest and easiest way to get your stuff seen. There are places like FB, G+, Deviantart, Behance, Tumblr, Flickr, Twitter, Etc.

2) Research galleries and publications that you would like to see your work in and find out how to submit. Do yourself a BIG favor and don't be a jackass and just submit stuff randomly, people don't like that. Really look at this on a professional level, and find out the details of the submission process and follow it, with honor and respect for your art and the places you are contacting. 3) Get involved in activism, use your art for a cause. Read the article I wrote: Just a Thought: Artists & Activism

4) Get over being rejected, learn to love it and move on. Rejection is something everyone deals with, it's how you use rejection to become better at what you do and how you are doing it. Read a blog about that here: A Blog About Being Rejected (IN the Art World)

After having a discussion with other artists, I came to the decisions to write a blog review about selling artwork on the internet and why it's important to work with a venue that best shares your creations in a classy, easy to use, and welcoming platform.

Overall, as artists, and creatives there are so many options to sell your work on the internet, which include places like Etsy, Ebay, Cargoh, Zibbet, Deviant Art, or more mainstream places like Cafe Press or Zazzle which I am not a huge fan of personally.

Do you want your store to be professional looking, extremely easy to navigate, welcoming to prospective buyers while remaining very personalized to your work, and alleviate the huge on-line (flee)marketplace that supports the over commercialized "lets throw your art on a mouse-pad" feeling?

Personally I think that it is so important for artist to get involved in things that make their hearts swell. As artists (from fine art, music, film, the written word, etc..) so many of us work from the deep passion inside, and to take that passion and bring it outside to fuel the ability to help others is an amazing opportunity.

If you have never used your creative outlet to help others, donate to a cause, or just create it within a voice to give others a voice may I suggest you give it a try. The gift is a gift that can keep giving if we let it.

CAREER MOVES THAT GET YOU NOWHERE FAST:
* Paying for mailing lists of galleries, agents, collectors, or any other arts-related professionals, businesses, or institutions that can supposedly advance your art career. This is almost always a complete waste of time and money, not only in terms of buying the lists, but also with respect to costs of designing and printing mailers. Mailing lists tend to be arbitrary and non-targeted (and often not even accurate), meaning that the overwhelming majority of recipients will have absolutely no interest in your art right from the start, and the rest will likely have no interest either because they have no idea who you are or why you're mailing them. The right way to do it? Research potential galleries or art world contacts one by one to determine whether your art is something they might be interested in seeing more of and learning more about. Getting personal is the only way to go.
* Pay-to-play galleries that want a chunk of money up front to give you shows or wall space, especially those that tantalize you with the prospect of exposure in major art centers like New York or London, and especially those with fees ranging into the thousands of dollars. To begin with, what incentive does any venue have to sell your art when you pay them in advance? And how about this one-- do these galleries even know who you are or what your art looks like or are they just spamming you off some email or mailing list they bought? (Hint: I occasionally get offers to show my art at pay-to-play galleries, but guess what? I'm not an artist.) By the way, some of these galleries make it seem like all artists pay for their shows, no matter what galleries they show at. THIS IS NOT TRUE AND IT NEVER WILL BE. And some of these galleries make it seem like they have a selection process for the artists they exhibit. You know what that process is? You write them a check; they give you a show.
* Pay-to-play show offers that promise reviews of your art, exposure to curators or museums, significant advertising, and other forms of art world publicity. Verify all such claims. Which curators will see the art? What publications will print the reviews and are they in-house (published by the people giving you the show) or ones widely respected in art world? Which critics will write the reviews? What publicity will you get? Where will the advertising appear? What past successes can the gallery report? Do they even know who you are and what your art looks like or is their offer simply part of a mass mailing or emailing?
* Pay-to-play competitions, juried shows, contests, or annual exhibitions, especially those held at retail galleries, especially those without a history or tradition or without recognizable jurors or sponsors or locations, especially those with healthy entry fees. Verify the history, tradition, significance, and jurors of any such offer before entering or sending money. For example, I received an offer not too long ago about a competition that had supposedly been going on for the better part of 20 years. I emailed the sponsor and asked them to email me the winners of their past competitions in this series and-- you guessed it-- I never heard back.
* Pay-to-play books, magazines, or other types of directories that offer to include your bio and images of your art in exchange for anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars. Some publishers claim they send their publications out to thousands of international dealers, curators, museums, distributors, and collectors. Any such claims MUST be verified, not only in terms of whether the purported recipients actually receive the publications, but more importantly, whether they take them seriously. Before you send any money, ask for the names of 20 museums, galleries, or significant art world notables who receive the publication, and then selectively contact them to see whether they're ever heard of it, seen it, or taken it seriously.
* A variation on the above example is pay-to-play periodicals that will give you an article in exchange for purchasing a certain amount of ad space. People in the art business know which publications operate this way... and not to take their content very seriously because it's based on who pays rather than on who's good.
* Pay-to-play websites offering to sell your art online for a fee. For instance, I recently received an invitation to sell my art (I'm not an artist, remember?) on "one of the world's most important art sites." Corroborate all such claims with concrete proof, in this case, that this website is indeed a major online player. You can check any website's traffic and rankings on Alexa. FYI, that "world's most important art site" turned out to be anything but. Selling art online is never easy, especially if you're not well known, especially on a website that offers thousands of works of art by hundreds of artists-- selling art with these kinds of odds is almost like winning the lottery.
* Unsolicited offers from total strangers to build you a website that will sell lots of art.
* Unsolicited offers from total strangers to get you high rankings on online search engines.
* Anyone who wants money up front to be your agent, broker, or representative. As with pay-to-play galleries, these individuals have no incentive to peddle your art when you pay them first. In fact, paying them to represent you is actually a disincentive-- they've already made their nut. But wait; it gets worse. You pay them X amount of dollars to represent you for three months or six months or whatever, the time passes, they sell nothing, and then they ask for more money, usually giving you the impression that sales are in the offing, it takes time to get your name out there, whatever. Right. For those of you who insist on pursuing a fee-based agent or representative, ask for names of artists who they represent. Get at least five names and find out how often and how much those artists sell through that agent or representative.
* First-time contracts with dealers, agents, or galleries you're not familiar with or haven't done business with before that require long-term exclusivity agreements (greater than six months or a year) to be your sole representatives over large geographical areas like statewide or nationally or internationally, reproduction rights to works of your art that pay no residuals or royalties to you, or similarly one-sided concessions.
* Offers to purchase get-rich-quick instructional books or courses that supposedly teach you how to make big money selling art on eBay, online, or in any other circumstance.
* Any pay-to-play offer from anyone who does not know who you are or what your art looks like, for example, emails from individuals or organizations that begin with the words "Dear Artist."
POSSIBLE SCAMS:
* Offers to purchase your art, the purchase to be paid for by one party, and the art shipped to another party. This often results in a complaint that the art was never received and a subsequent request for a complete refund.
* Offers to pay for your art in forms of cash, including wire transfer to your bank account, money order, Western Union, cashier's check, or personal check-- especially when the amount of the payment is greater than the cost of the art (you're supposed to cash the money order or whatever, then send the buyer the art plus the amount of the overpayment. The bad news? The check or money order often turns out to be counterfeit).
* Credit card purchases (assuming you accept credit cards) where the name of the purchaser does not match the name on the credit card. Require the cardholder to personally contact you and verify that the charge is legitimate, and that he or she knows the buyer (the name on the credit card). And don't forget to get the card's security code and billing zipcode. And ship the art only to the address of the cardholder.
* Email requests to buy your art, but that do not mention you by name and contain no specific information about either you or your art.
* Email requests to do business with you where you are asked to reply to an email address different than the originating address (unless the sender has a verifiable explanation for using an alternate email address).
* Anyone who contacts your gallery, agent, or representative claiming that you're in trouble, that you need money, and to send that money to a third party fast-- either by wire transfer or by Western Union. Believe it or not, this scam is actually going around, and I've heard of at least one gallery falling victim to it.
* Unsolicited communications from anyone you don't know claiming to have a piece or pieces of your art sold, to send them the art, and that they'll pay you either upon receiving it or after they get paid for it. These may occasionally be legitimate, but make sure you get references and verify whom you're dealing with before shipping anything off in the mail.
* Unsolicited or unqualified requests to send samples of your art to dealers, galleries, agents, or representatives you're not familiar with.
TIPS FOR EVALUATING OFFERS OR PROPOSALS:
* Find out how they heard about you. Ask what they know about you. Ask them to describe your art. If they're so sure they can advance your career, you would assume they know who you are and what your art looks like. The truth? Often, you're no more than a name on a bulk mailing or email list, and those making the offers have no idea who you are.
* Ask for references. These include names of artists who have sold well, gotten shows, gotten reviews, or won prizes as a result of their participation in whatever is being offered. Verify that whoever or whatever it is has the reputation or influence they claim to have in the art community.
* If an email or website lists stores, galleries, institutions or other retail outlets where their publication or publications are distributed and available for sale, call those places to confirm that this is actually the case.
* If an email or web site claims that they get large amounts of online traffic, check those claims out on Alexa. Compare their website's rankings to those of websites that you're familiar with in order to verify that those claims are in fact true (or otherwise).
* Search online using the title of the event, or the name of the gallery or individual making the offer. Exercise due diligence here; don't just read a few top search results (those results may belong to the parties making the offers). And watch out when all you come up with are press releases written by the parties making the offers, and posted on free press release websites.
* Search online using the names of the individuals or businesses along with words like "scam" or "fraud" and see what comes up. You might be surprised.
* Speak to a principal either by phone or in person.
* When verifying claims, never accept generalities. For instance, a statement like "this publication will be distributed to museums worldwide" is not adequate. You want specific names and contact information.
* Lastly, remember-- you can't buy fame; you gotta earn it.

Oceanic Awareness Collaboration and Andi Campognone Projects are proud to present the 1st annual Art for Awareness Benefit. A one night event Saturday, February 26, 2011 from 6 – 11pm, featuring art work by 50 artists from around the country and as far away as the UK and Indonesia.

This exhibition and sale is a mix of all genres of art; from fine art to graffiti, sculpting to tattoo art. There is something for everyone in this auction not only visually, but also financially. You will find semi-expensive originals to lower-priced limited rare prints. OAC is asking a $10 donation at the door, inside you’ll find a wide variety of art, drinks, food, and live music out on the patio space. The bidding will stop at 10pm. The gallery is located half a block from Acerogami (The Glass House Bar) and the after party will be held at Acerogami.

Art for Awareness 2011 is a creative effort to raise global awareness about the North Pacific Garbage Patch and the negative effects of plastic pollution. OAC has partnered with Guided Discoveries to also use the proceeds from this art sale to provide scholarships to a number of students with financial needs who apply to attend the Catalina Island Marine Institute summer camp. Those receiving scholarships will be in the age range of 8 – 17. OAC is a non-profit organization formed to use art, music, and fashion to raise environmental awareness to the youth culture through creative outlets.

“The mind is a fertile canvas where concepts are born and ideas are harvested. Three seeds were planted in the thoughts of visionaries and from them came forth the hybrid known as OAC. Art, Music, and Fashion would soon thereafter come together to alter the worlds view of our habitat. OAC is growing against the grains of normalcy to bring the worlds wounds before the public eye. OAC sets its scope on all things ocean related and not widely addressed. The current plan, a specific focus, takes aim at the North Pacific Gyre, which has a problem that has been labeled “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”. We realize that one non-profit organization can’t make it stop, but collectively we can urge the world to change the circumstances. OAC and Algalita Marine Research Foundation have teamed up to tackle the Garbage Patch in a new way, this New Year. Proceeds will also go to fund Algalita summer 2011 research voyage to the North Pacific Gyre. This is the first of many creative collaborations to come from the minds behind OAC.

Looking to get creative, express some emotions, or just have some fun?

A visual journal is a great way to do so.

It's a great idea to keep a journal, and even better sometimes to keep a visual journal. I was introduced to keeping a visual journal by fellow artist and friend, Celebrity Artist Michael Bell. Not long after I picked up a cheap journal at Micheal's did I find I was exploring creative ideas that were not typical to what I was used to. It was refreshing.

I would take words from my poetry, and mix them with paint, rip up pages, cut out things from other things, and glue on them, scribble, doodle, use glues and glitter and anything else I could find to create the pages in my book.

Sometimes I would actually sketch out some ideas for main pieces of artwork that are now in existence and sometimes I would just rub paint all over the page with my fingers. It's really a wonderful way to get creative, without pressure. You just do.

Take the premise of a typical journal in the form of the written word; you just jot down ideas, how you felt that day, what you did, what is on your mind, a letter to Santa, a bitch, a private love letter, and so forth. Journaling is for the heart, mind, body and soul and can be another private way to explore your emotions on a visual level, rather than strictly on a written level. Now think of that in terms of taking some creative medium and doing the same.

1) You don't have to be an artist
2) You don't have to be any good at art, it's not a competition
3) It's a free flow type of idea, nothing is pressure some
4) It's cathartic
5) It's an interesting way to look at a historical time-line of your life

I challenge you to go get a journal and give it a try! Also, google "visual journaling" or type it into "you tube" and see what other do!

I am Stuck & the Inevitable Creative Block

Most creative people come to a point in their ventures where they feel "STUCK". Some can become stuck at a specific point in a project, or deal with the inevitable all-encompassing "CREATIVE BLOCK". We hear dreadful tails of "BLOCKS", the poor people going through them, and we are thankful we are not at that place. That place can be very lonely. It can last days, weeks, months and well into years.

THEN IT HAPPENS TO YOU!?

So one day after hearing such tails you find yourself alone in the darkness of your mind, looking hypnotically at a blank piece of a paper, canvas, etc. The inspiration is just not there, and it feels nothing like working out a problem or getting a game plan. The feeling is wrong, and you know something is wrong. You try a little of this and a little of that, but nothing is clicking, and the motor has stopped. You halt and come to understand your predicament. It's not pretty. You are "STUCK".

PRESSURE: THE BIG NO, NO

So then the pressure begins, especially if you have deadlines but even without deadlines the pressure can be unbearable. You start to wonder what is wrong, and as time goes on you even question if doing what you do might just be, over.

"Did I just actually think that?"

"Did I say all I had to say?"

It's similar to jumping out of a plane, and this time the shoot isn't opening. It can make you question a lot of things, reevaluate your life, your job, your process, the people you are around - everything, Especially if it goes on for what seems like decades. The longer you go, the harder you question and the less faith you have, which makes it almost impossible to be creative since creativity is typically spontaneous to some extent. Pressure is not what you need. So back off, give yourself room and don't get discouraged. Pressure is a creativity KILLER.

PERSONAL JOURNEY WITH CREATIVE BLOCK

Since I started my professional art/writing/design career in late 2005, there was little to no creative block in my world. I was pouring out something constantly, and never really thought about what it would feel like to be "halted".

After my brother's suicide in Feb of 2010, something just turned off. A sudden switch was flipped, and I went without creating anything for well over 8 months. I was hard on myself, and felt lost. Knowing I had a lot to say, knowing that I was bursting at the seems with emotions, and some deep issues I could not even put pen to paper to write a daily journal, let alone make something fresh and new. I was "STUCK" and I started to question if I ever would be creative again. It was very depressing, and hard for me since all my creations have been a direct reflection of dealing with everyday life struggles, and as a form of catharsis I needed my creativity the most at this traumatic time. I lost it, and was alone. In a way it's very much like losing a friend.

HOW CAN I GET IT BACK?

I think when we hit a point that we can't create (this is just my feeling) that there is something inside that we need to find to resolve, and then look at that through a creative perspective. That is how I got it back, not saying it's going to last forever but it's a direction to focus on, and you will feel better doing something.

Is there something you need to resolve? Personal, political, with other people, the world, family, your mother-in-law, etc.... Good, bad or neutral ideas/situations that need resolution can fuel where you want to go with your creativity? Maybe give you a boost!

THE QUICK LIST OF - DO NOT's

Do Not pressure yourself

Do Not make the mistake of thinking "it's over"

Do Not be hard on yourself, creativity is a joy

Do Not compare yourself to others

Do Not lose the "joy" of what creativity really is

DO Not STOP - Doodle, scribe, finger paint, etc..

THE QUICK LIST OF - DO's

Do be open to create things that might be out of your comfort zone, and explore

Look at your past portfolio and reflect on the motivations of your past work

When reflecting on past works, list the likes and dislikes of your past works

Talk to other creative people, and bounce idea off them

Mentor another artist, and help them grow

Participate in group projects

Clean up your work area, it might help clear your mind

Get some good food, relax and let you mind go

STUCK CAN MEAN GROWTH

Maybe you just hit a point where you need to grow, and challenge yourself in other ways. As we grow as creative people we all go through phases in what we create and how we create it. Sometimes a new phase can mimic the feeling of "STUCK" yet it is beautiful, and part of the process of growing to a new level.

Q. Has this ever happened to you: If you are inspired by something and begin to work on a project, but then in the middle of working find yourself over critiquing it & then ending up with creator block due to indecision, what do you do to work thru it?

Yes, and I think it happens to everyone that is creative. I think the key to not getting in that spot is not not "critique" and to just "create". Creation is a process, and when we start looking at it over and over again, especially in a manner of "critique" then it throws us off the boat, and our muse goes away. I think we need to focus on making the art we love, and focus less on what others might think, or what is or is not "perfect" about what we are doing.

If I find myself in a pace where a piece of art is frustrating me, then I walk away for at least a week and don't even look at it. For me I know when I am working on something so long, I can get so lost in the work it's hard to really look from an objective place. At least a week, if not longer and then I focus on something else, maybe even in a totally different medium.

A touring art exhibition raising awareness about Missouri's Puppy Mills Presented by the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation

“Misery in Missouri: Dogs Can't Vote... You Can” is an art exhibit sponsored by the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation in conjunction with Framations Art Gallery. The goal of the exhibit is to shed light on the Missouri puppy mill problem through a visual means. All of the artwork in this compelling exhibit was created by Missouri artists and includes artist comments, adding even more depth and emotion to the overall effect.

It has been 18 years since the Animal Care Facilities Act was passed, and yet Missouri still remains the “Puppy Mill Capital of the United States” due to its many unsanitary, overcrowded, and poorly regulated commercial dog breeding facilities. According to a state audit report released in July 2008, the Department of Agriculture had failed to inspect 40 percent of the state’s known licensed commercial breeders as required by law. Missouri has three times as many commercial breeders as any other state in the country.
The Alliance is calling upon the public to become part of the exhibit by adding their signatures to a special interactive artwork called “Show Me” by local artist Ken Farris. The public will also be encouraged to not only contact their elected officials about puppy mills but also to vote yes on November 2, 2010 for Proposition B, the Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act.

Hello Everyone,

I wanted to first thank you for all the support over the last couple months, as many of you know just how hard it has been with the loss of my brother to suicide. I have found that personally to get back to a place where it is good for me I need to take a time off to focus on myself, family and other things not pertaining to my art career momentarily, so that I can come back and effectivly regain focus.

Life changes us in so many ways.

I will be gone from today June 20, 2010 until the first week of August 2010.

There are times when we must go through negative situations. Maybe people say something negative about us, or they show rejection or even resentment against us. In such situations, it may be difficult to stay positive. We may be inclined to react negatively to them. That won’t do us any good though; doing so will just make the situation worse. People may behave even more negatively to us. Our day would be filled with anger and disappointment. At the end, nobody wins.

Though it’s not easy, it’s important to stay positive in negative situations. Beat the negative situations by staying positive. Here are 15 tips on how to do it; pick the ones that work for you:

Never respond when you are not calm. If you are not sure that you are calm, don’t respond. Take time to calm yourself down first.
Take a deep breath as a first step to calm yourself down.
Speak in gentle tone to reduce the tension of the situation.
Realize that you can find opportunities in negative situations. Albert Einstein said: “In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity.”
Look at the content of what people say to you for something positive that you can act upon to improve yourself. Don’t just reject the whole messages.
For the rest of the messages which is negative, simply ignore it.
Maintain positive view of the people. Maybe you don’t like their messages or behavior, but that doesn’t mean that you can hate them personally.
Realize that having negative feelings will just hurt you, not them. So there is no reason for you to have any negative feeling.
If you make mistakes, be open to admit it.
If you make mistakes, remember this quote by George Bernard Shaw: “A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing.”
If you can, listen to motivational audio program to feed positive thoughts into your mind.
Talk to a positive friend who can encourage you.
Remember your favorite quotes to give you inspiration and motivation. This is one reason why you should have quote of the day.
Look at the negative situations as your training sessions for real life. The higher you climb in life, the worse the negative situations would be, so you’d better be prepared for them.
Realize that you can’t please everyone. In fact, nobody can. Sometimes you need to just let some people go. Realizing this will relieve you from a lot of unnecessary burden so that you can focus on the people that you can positively interact with.

These days, much of my free time is focused intently on either writing articles or investigating business opportunities. I can say I’ve mostly eliminated excessive time wasting activities like playing on the Xbox, watching TV and browsing Digg. I’m feeling more productive and I’m getting things done. Life is good!
However, as with anything worth accomplishing, I understand my transition to a full-time Entrepreneur will naturally take time and perseverance. Which is why I’d like to say thank you to my family and friends. They’ve been helping by providing encouragement especially during periods when I was feeling down and demotivated. In case you’re wondering, this happens every now and then, in particular when I’m trying to overcome my self imposed limitations. This writing gig is hard work!
Let me share with you a few techniques of encouraging others I have observed which works. I can pretty much vouch for each of these because they have been applied on me at one stage or another.

Show genuine interest. I believe this is by far the most effective way of encouraging others. Let them know you care. Express genuine interest by asking questions. Get them talking. I find the act of talking and thinking can fire up the engines (roar!). With some hope and luck, this can lead to positive action. But don’t be fake about it and don’t go overboard.
Acknowledge what’s important to them. When you acknowledge what’s important to others, you provide a form of affirmation and validation about who they are and what they’re doing. Whether they can admit it or not, each of them deep down craves this acknowledgement. The affirmation and validation is like nitro for their confidence and self-esteem.
Say “Well done”. Nothing worth doing is ever easy. If it’s easy, then it’s not worth doing. Worthwhile things always takes time and effort. One good way of providing encouragement is simply by saying “Well done” or “Congratulations”. These magical Words of Encouragement at the right time can make all the difference between “keep going” and “give up”.
Say “Thank you”. Common courtesy. Good manners. That what this tip is about. It’s only natural to expect a reward after hard work. It’s only natural to thank someone when they do something for you. You can start now. Thank your wife after she cooks a nice meal. Thank your friend for lending you that Stargate DVD. A simple thank you lets others know what they have done is worthwhile and meaningful to you.
Reciprocate the favour. If someone does something nice for you, a great way to show your appreciation is simply to reciprocate the favour. Think of this as a pendulum. They do something nice for you. You do something nice for them. They do something nice for you. You do something nice for them. And so on…
Respond with something unexpected. Another effective way to encourage others is to respond with something totally unexpected. Out of the blue. That’s when the maximumemotional level and our brains are hard wired to respond to emotional things. impact is delivered. Such acts can reach them at an
Ask for advice or confide in them. This is like flattery. Haven’t you felt like you were on top of the world when your peers asked you for advice or confided in you about something personal or important to them? Didn’t that make you want to help and do everything you can to ensure their faith in you is well founded?
Offer to lend a hand. Waiting for someone to ask you for advice is passive. You can be proactive by offering to lend a hand. If that person sees that you are willing to commit your own time and energy in their interests, they will be more committed to seeing it through and less likely to give up themselves.

In my experience, whenever my family and friends have shown genuine interest in my goals, I became more enthusiastic myself. Often my wife would ask – “How am I going?” or “What are you looking at now?” or “I like your latest article”. Simple words? Perhaps. But delivered at the right time, the effect is profound! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – enlist your family and friends in your cause.
Do you have a spouse or friend who is trying to accomplish something and you need to provide encouragement? Do you have a child who is thinking about a certain vocation but is unsure? Perhaps, your son or daughter would like to pursue a career in the arts, interior design or as a sports athlete? If you do, then they are going to need as much encouragement as they can get.
Giving encouragement can boost that person’s motivation, which in turn lead to actions and finally results. As I’ve previously written, personal development is about incremental changes and step by step improvements. Only in this manner can we inch closer to fulfilling greater and more ambitious goals.
So, start now. As a recipient of encouragement, I can attest to its effects. I’m feeling great. I’m feeling positive. I’m getting things done.

In a world of six billion people, it’s easy to believe that the only way to initiate profound transformation is to take extreme action. Everything we do and think affects the people in our lives, and their reactions in turn affect others. As the effect of a seemingly insignificant word passes from person to person, its impact grows and can become a source of great joy, inspiration, anxiety, or pain. Your thoughts and actions are like stones dropped into still waters, causing ripples to spread and expand as they move outward. The impact you have on the world is greater than you could ever imagine, and the choices you make can have far-reaching consequences. You can use the ripple effect to make a positive difference and spread waves of kindness that will wash over the world.

Should the opportunity arise, the recipient of a good deed will likely feel compelled to do a good deed for someone else. Someone feeling the effects of negative energy will be more likely to pass on that negative energy. One act of charity, one thoughtful deed, or even one positive thought can pass from individual to individual, snowballing until it becomes a group movement or the ray of hope that saves someone’s life. Every transformation, just like every ripple, has a point of origin. You must believe in your ability to be that point of origin if you want to use the ripples you create to spread goodness. Consider the effect of your thoughts and actions, and try to act graciously as much as possible.

A smile directed at a stranger, a compliment given to a friend, an attitude of laughter, or a thoughtful gesture can send ripples that spread among your loved ones and associates, out into your community, and finally throughout the world. You have the power to touch the lives of everyone you come into contact with and everyone those people come into contact with. The momentum of your influence will grow as your ripples moves onward and outward. One of those ripples could become a tidal wave of positivity.
